Turning off Email Scanning with Norton AntiVirus 2003-2006
Problem Email locking up due to Norton scanning the email account prior to receiving or sending the email
Solution The best solution is to disable the Norton email scanning for whichever portion is causing the problem.
Turning off Email Scanning
- Exit any email programs that are running
- Open Norton AntiVirus (if SystemWorks or Internet Security open that program)
- Click the Options button at the top of the window.
- If you see a menu, Click Norton AntiVirus (if you do not see the menu goto step 5)
- Click Email on the left side.
- Uncheck Scan Incoming Email and/or Scan Outgoing Email (whichever one is causing the problems in your email program)
- Click OK.
- Close Norton AntiVirus (or SystemWorks or Internet Security Program)
This will stop Norton from scanning the message before downloading or/and before sending the message which can sometimes stop the email from sending or receiving due to time out error.
Norton AntiVirus 2007
Symantec changed the interface for the 2007 version, presumably for reasons known to them and no one else. For Norton 2007 you will have to:
- Open Norton AntiVirus 2007 (should be in Start > Programs / All Programs)
- Click on Settings.
- Under the Email and Messaging header there should be three choices: Scan Outgoing Mail, Scan Incoming Mail, and Scan Instant Messages. Turn off Scan Outgoing Mail, and a thing will pop up warning you about computer security -- where it says "15 minutes", change that to "Permanently".
- Turn off Scan Incoming Mail, and a thing will pop up warning you about
computer security -- change the "15 minutes" to "Permanently".
I guess that's all. I haven't really been able to test whether this works or if there's any other settings that need to be changed also, but this should help you a little bit.
